Empowering Community Revitalization Through the Arts
The National Main Street Program, developed by Main Street America, is a nationally recognized approach to downtown revitalization that helps communities preserve their historic character while fostering economic growth and community development. The program is guided by the Four Points Approach®: Economic Vitality, Design, Promotion, and Organization. Through these principles, communities work to strengthen local businesses, enhance the appearance and functionality of downtown districts, attract investment, and build collaborative partnerships among public, private, and nonprofit stakeholders. The Main Street approach promotes sustainable revitalization by leveraging a community’s unique assets, preserving historic resources, and creating vibrant downtowns where residents, businesses, and visitors can thrive.
The Monongahela Main Street Program applies these principles to strengthen and revitalize the city’s historic downtown district. The program supports economic vitality by encouraging business growth, attracting new investment, and assisting local entrepreneurs. Through design initiatives, it promotes historic preservation, streetscape improvements, and beautification projects that enhance the community’s character and appeal. Promotional efforts, including festivals, markets, and community events, help draw visitors downtown and increase support for local businesses. By fostering partnerships among residents, businesses, community organizations, and local government, the Monongahela Main Street Program creates a coordinated effort to preserve Monongahela’s heritage, stimulate economic development, and improve the quality of life for the entire community.
“I have driven through Monongahela many times but have not stopped to shop or dine. This event gave me the opportunity to see the business district with a new perspective, one of an interesting and vibrant community.
I was not only able to browse the artist’s tents but also visited the shops in the wonderful, historic storefronts. I was able to see the unique and varied retail offerings and restaurant choices. I plan to visit again soon and bring some friends to enjoy what the town has to offer.”
